3.3 Cultural constraints

The studies within South Gloucestershire and North Somerset were undertaken in tandem. As such, the constraints used were consistent across both study areas.

Click on the drop-down headings below to read about the cultural heritage constraints.

Data Source:

  • Historic England
  • South Gloucestershire Council
  • North Somerset Council

Assumption:

Land covered by the following cultural heritage designations were treated as constraints:

  • Registered Battlefields
  • Scheduled Monuments
  • Registered Parks and Gardens
  • Conservation Areas

Justification:

Generally, these sites would not be suitable for woodland planting based on law/policy/guidance including:

  • National Planning Policy Framework.
  • The Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage.
  • National Heritage Act 1983.
  • Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act of 1979.
  • Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990.

These sites are protected and as such woodland planting on them or in proximity to them may be inappropriate, unless identified as part of the site management plans, or dependent on the circumstances in individual sites.

Individual site assessment, including consideration of appropriate buffers around specific features where their setting would be compromised by woodland planting is beyond the scope of this study,

See the 3.6 Parameters considered but not included as constraints page regarding the treatment of listed buildings.
